How to Do an ILS

Doing an ILS can be a challenge in the best of conditions, but as the weather deteriorates, it can get very hard unless you know how to do them. That's why I put this here, so you know how to do them on Flight SImulator!

1. When the controller tells you what approach to expect, if she tells you 'visual', ask for a ILS.

2. Once you know what runway and approach you'll use, click PROC on your GPS.

3. Choose select approach, and scroll down to your ILS runway.

4. Usually, you would click vectors. I do not know nor will I try to tell you how to do any other approach.

5. Hit activate, and then FPL.

6. Put the ILS frequency in Nav 1 and the ATIS frequency in Com 2. You can find the ILS frequency by clicking on that runway in map mode. You can also find the runway heading there. For the ATIS, zoom out and click on the airport icon, not runway.

7. Tune the runway heading in course.

8. Now you must wait for the ILS clearance.

9. Once you are cleared on the ILS, maintain the given altitude, activate Nav 1, and switch from HDG mode to Nav mode in the autopilot. (Note: The Nav/GPS switch should still be on GPS)

10. When centered on the magenta line on the GPS before you hit the localizer, swich the GPS/Nav switch to Nav. (Note: The most common mistake is to go too fast! Be sure to give yourself time to slow down to at least 170 knots before you intercept the localizer or it won't work!)

11. Before you hit the glideslope, switch Nav mode to APP mode in the autopilot. It is important you do this before you hit the glideslope, because if you're above the glideslope, it won't work.

12. When you are level with the glideslope, ALT should automatically turn off and APP should take over navigation.

13.When close to touchdown, turn off autopilot and auto-throttle. You must then hand fly it for a very short time to the flare, unless it is enabled with auto-land. I won't get into that since none of the default aircraft are.

14. If you miss the approach, turn the GPS/Nav switch to GPS, hit Nav, and ask ATC to do the published approach.

15. Ascend to the altitude ATC gave you and make sure the autopilot keeps the airplane on the magenta line. When finished, tell ATC and they should vector you back to the approach. Then you can repeat the process!
